Dear EDITOR,

I wasn't sure who to contact, so I decided that perhaps the people should be aware of a situation that is occurring to foreign tourists who come to Negros Oriental for a holiday. My wife is a Filipina, and upon us coming home for Christmas last year, we decided that we would all go to Twin Lakes to view what is one of Negros Oriental's premier tourist attractions. Upon arriving at Twin Lakes, I was surprised to learn that the entry fee for foreigners like myself (from Australia) is P100 and P10 for local Filipinos. My concern is not the price per se, as I am aware that as an Australian, it is possible that I may receive a higher income than a local Filipino.

Back home, we have a name for a practice whereby a group from a different culture are treated differently because of their origin. We call it racism. For sure, there are men of means who live in the Philippines who are blessed with great financial wealth (even by dollar standards are millionaires), who would be able to avail of a P10 entry.
Using this logic, this is clearly a "fine" for being a white foreigner. My issue is with the principle of a policy that sets a precedent for charging foreigners more based upon the fact that they appear foreign. If I had Asian skin and kept my mouth shut, I would have passed for a P10 entry, even if I was, say, from Japan and a man of financial means. Negros Tourism needs to be aware that this practice is happening.
Practices such as these left unchecked result in a conclusion whereby different prices are set for foreigners everywhere.
We really want to come and see your beautiful province without being singled out and taken advantage of in ways such as this. Negros Oriental truly is a beautiful place and I know that many of my peers would love to see it. This letter is just something to think about of. If Negros Oriental truly hopes to become the tourism draw card that the people hope for, then the people (tourists) need to be made feel welcome. They don't need to be fined for being white.

Is zelf niet zo dat de tarieven zijn:
10 voor locale bezoekers
10 voor Filippijnse toeristen
10 voor buitenlandse toeristen

Welke Filippijnen zullen als toerist een bezoek brengen? Juist, zij die geld hebben! Een "live-in-maid" die 5.000 peso per maand verdiend heeft andere zorgen dan vakantie.
De rijkste Filippijn die er is, betaalt 10 peso maar elke buitenlander die moet sparen voor zijn vakantie moet het tienvoudige betalen.

Vroeger heb ik die discussie nog eens gehad, toen kwam men met het argument dat een toerist hier meer betaald in  dan een Europeaan.  Als ik in datzelfde hotel verblijf en hetzelfde restaurant eet kost me dat hetzelfde bedrag.  Natuurlijk is het duurder dan thuis eten en slapen maar dat naast de kwestie.
Zelfde dienst = zelfde prijs.

De uitvlucht van de gouverneur: "Ik betaal in Thailand ook meer" is kinderachtig. Het lijkt op de uitvluchten van een kind dat betrapt wordt. Zij doen het ook! Je kan niet je fouten vergoeilijken door te zeggen dat anderen het ook doen. Hij heeft blijkbaar nooit gehoord van "Verbeter de wereld begin bij jezelf!"
