Even vergeten

Op de dag van de aardbeving was het de city-mayor Sagbarbarria die zelf in een "dienstauto" over de microfoon zat te gillen: (ZOALS IK DAT VANDAAG HOORDE)..... :lachen: :lachen:

" LEAVE THE CITY, THERE IS A BIG TSJUNAMI UNDERWAY TO DUMAGUETE CITY, FIND HIGHER GROUNDS TO STAY".................... :lachen: :lachen:

Als gevolg van het "loos" alarm... :jajaja: :jajaja:

MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES............... :lachen: :jajaja:

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seis mology (Phivolcs) has recorded over l,300 af tershocks since Monday's 6.9 magnitude earthquake which rocked the entire Negros Island with the epicenter somewhere between Tayasan and Cebu Island, and below the Tanon Strait.

Aftershocks are lower in magnitude from the main shock. These after shocks average between 4 to 5 magnitude on the Richter scale.

Phivolcs also said that the aftershocks could last or a month or two coming in at different intervals.

Most of the mass of people in Dumaguete, Negros, and even Cebu over reacted on the incidence of the 6.9 magnitude earthquake which rocked the entire Pacific Ring in what was the first of its kind in Dumaguete which experienced the s trongest earthquake here ever.

Many people thought that a tidal wave or tsunami was to follow. Scientifically that is correct, because geologists and physicists say, in the vicinity of the epic center, of a quake over the magnitue of 5 up , in ten minutes following the tremor, a tsunami is usually expected.

But Negros island is surrounded by islands and that geophysical position saved this island province of Negros from a possible tsunami.

This is in contrast to a situation where this island had we been situated in an open sea area like Hawaii or the Spratleys.

It was an earthquake to remember. The 6.9 magnitude earthquake —never before to happen in this part of the globe –– shook the entire Negros island at ll:49 noontime of Monday, February 6, just when most people were preparing for lunch. Little did thousands of Negrenses know that at that very moment, various parts in the country and the world, which belonged to the "Pacific Ring of Fire" also experienced the same tectonic shock.

A tectonic shock is a movement of the earth's crust that causes ground dislocations both on the surface and underground. This time, the epicenter was underwater, at the Tanon steight some 40 kilometers below, and between the town of Tayasan and the island of Cebu.

Geologists say it was an unmonitored trench which physicists believe was relatively new and made its first major movement on February 6. They say it won't come back after a number of years, we don't know. UNPREPARED.

Hardly anyone, especially those in the local governments, took disaster preparedness seriously until the real one came at high noon of February 6.

The unpreparedness of the people was the real disaster itself! If the people were prepared, as they should have been, and as even mandated by law which was almost ignored, the damages could have been minimized, but never eliminated.

How much more the small sleepy towns which were hardest hit? Even the Phivolcs in San Antonio and La Castellana didn't seem to know what hit Negros island. Was it bumped by an invisible spaceship from Siquijor?

The rescue, relief, rehabilitation and retrieval operations have now become a serious nightmare because everybody wants to help but all acts are not seemingly synchronized nor synergized.

But let us blame no one. This is a great lesson learned. Let us learn from our mistakes and come out victorious and better prepared should another one come along many years from now.
